The Value of Life: Abortion, Adoption, and Agency
How our language around pregnancy shifts between abortion and miscarriage, revealing deeper questions about how we determine the value of human life.
Dear Inklings,
Before we get into this, I must add a disclaimer that this essay is a thought experiment and does not necessarily reflect my personal views. I have never had an abortion. I have been in a situation where I might have had to consider it.
Thank you to my best friend and husband for discussing this with me. Between the three of us, we cover almost the full spectrum of viewpoints, so it made for quite a lively debate.
Now then, let’s consider these two viewpoints:
Miscarriage is the loss of a child.
Abortion is the removal of a clump of cells.
How can both be true?
